K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari, Saekeirei, and Kimigayo

During Japanese colonialism, K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari rejects all forms of niponization, such as singing Kimigayo and flying the Hinomaru flag. Then in 1942, K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari was jailed (Jombang), transferred to Mojokerto prison, and then held captured in Surabaya. He is considered a barrier to the Japanese movement.
Another fatwa issued by K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari is to forbid Saekeirei, total respect for Emperor Teno Heika by bowing a body like in prayer and facing Tokyo in 1942, the fatwa issued which resulted in K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari was jailed for four months and made a defect in his fingers. (Mas’ud, 2004: 230).
