Abdul Muis was a National Movement figure who initially worked in politics through the Sarekat Islam organization. Abdul Muis returned to Padang in 1923, which made the Dutch government worried that a similar incident would occur in Toli-toli, where Abdul Muis’ presence could trigger people’s awareness of government policies. So, there was expulsion from Abdul Muis’ home area, namely West Sumatra. The expulsion from West Sumatra also had an emotional impact. Abdul Muis, a native of West Sumatra, is no longer allowed to go to where he came from. This was one of the factors that influenced Abdul Muis’ shift from the political field to the literary field, apart from the sharp differences of opinion with the leader of Sarekat Islam, Cokroaminoto.
