Hoegeng Rebukes the PKI

Hoegeng Iman Santoso is the 5th Chief of Police of the Republic of Indonesia. While studying in Yogya, Hoegeng socialized with fellow students who would later become public figures in Indonesia, such as Burhanuddin Harahap, who became prime minister during the Parliamentary Democracy period, Rosihan Anwar, a national press figure, and Usmar Ismail, who would later become a figure in Indonesian film (Sutrisno, 2004). : 7).
In 1955, Hoegeng carried out the task of securing and supervising security during the 1955 General Election in the East Java region. Hoegeng paid attention to the movements of the PKI, one of the parties participating in the 1955 elections, because, simultaneously, the PKI was carrying out its communist propaganda. At a campaign rally for his party, the East Java PKI leader made a speech about ulama or kyai, who secretly went to restaurants to eat food that was not halal, pork. The PKI leader also invited the public not to trust and stay away from the ulama, who contradicted his teachings.
This condition can undoubtedly offend Muslims and is feared to trigger conflict and disrupt security and order during the elections. As Head of the DPKN, Hoegeng immediately summoned the East Java PKI Leader to appear to overcome and prevent this. Hoegeng warned that this action could trigger conflict and criticized this campaign action not to be repeated. If something similar happens, Hoegeng will not hesitate to take action against him. After this incident, the reaction of the East Java PKI towards Hoegeng became negative (Yusra and Ramadhan, 1994: 198)
