The History Education study program was established on October 20, 1954, is one of the oldest institutions within the Indonesian Education University (UPI), and was directly led by Mohammad Yamin. He at that time served as Minister of PP and K (Teaching, Education, and Culture).
In the academic environment of UPI, this figure is also seen as one of the founding fathers of PTPG (Teacher Education College), the forerunner of the UPI institution in Bandung. When this institution was first established, the department was named the "Department of Cultural History."
