4 PEOPLE, 4 LANGUAGES

In 1934 Buya HAMKA came to Jakarta. He was now invited to pray by Zain M. Djambek at a mosque behind the Ministry of Social Affairs. The one who read the Khutbah was Haji Agus Salim. After Friday prayers, we sat together, namely Haji Agus Salim, Mohammad Syah Syafi’I, Ismail Jamil, Zain Djambek, and Buya HAMKA himself. They conversed casually before heading home with Ismail Jamil, who spoke English. Zain Djambek spoke Arabic, and with Buya HAMKA, he spoke Minang (Commemoration Committee, 1984: 263).
